Synopsis

Perspective: Robbins Reef is the first book ever written about Robbins Reef Lighthouse. Robbins Reef Lighthouse, a five-story granite beacon, has stood in New York Harbor near Staten Island's St. George neighborhood since 1839. It's often called "Kate's Light" after keeper Katherine Walker, who was appointed to the post in 1886. During her 33-year tenure she saved 50 men from the sea and and raised her children and grandchildren. In 2010 the US Dept. of the Interior awarded stewardship of the lighthouse to the Noble Maritime Collection. In keeping with the museum's mission to preserve New York Harbor history, the museum developed and embarked on a ten-year plan to restore the lighthouse to its 19th century appearance using volunteer labor and private funds, as we did when the Noble Crew restored the museum's landmark building. Once restored, Robbins Reef will open to the public for the first time. Perspective: Robbins Reef is a catalog of the exhibition, Robbins Reef Lighthouse: A Home in the Harbor, which opened at the museum in 2015, and contains interpretations of the light by contemporary and historic artists. The book also contains a detailed history of the lighthouse and features the story of Kate Walker, who kept the light from 1886 until 1919.
