Working on my death Chant borrows the Native American tradition of preparing for death by writing a death chant to summarize the poet's current life and look ahead to the next one. Huff retired from public service in 1991. By gathering together published and unpublished poems written over the last twenty years he creates a series of reflections and visions of his life as a poet and worker. Huff's poetry runs against the grain of career academic poets. Most of his life has been spent in the working class, and his poetry reflects the power of human relations almost as much as it plays off the power of the language.
