This story will bring you to life.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Imagine following someone through two centuries, across both heaven and earth. You'll pass from the Great Famine in Ireland to contemporary Los Angeles. Imagine that through all of this time, the one you follow is pursuing a lover whom he betrays, who then gets her revenge, and who finally redeems him. Now imagine that you must be born — and die — three times to do all of this.
That’s the unique story told in “Gifts”, a novel that blends genres — paranormal mystery, historical romance, as well as inspirational fantasy.
A quarter of all Americans now believe in reincarnation. But readers don’t have to believe in rebirth to enjoy the adventures of the memorable characters and many surprises that propel this tale of love lost and regained. They’ll read three life stories told by one consciousness as it passes through three consecutive incarnations on earth. Before, in between, and after each life, a Spirit named Chip will explain the significance of the individuals Chip became in three embodiments on earth.
Chip explains this by sending an e-mail to “the Alchemist,” a video game designer, at the start of the story. At the very end of the novel, an unexpected fact about the Alchemist's identity is revealed.

Michael D. Riley waited until retiring from a successful business career to write the first work of fiction he'd composed since he was a teen. It may have been folly or too much time on his hands, but he claims to been inspired by his sense that he had some insights he needed to share.
Riley feels blessed with a long and somewhat unconventional lifetime that gave him time to think about "what it all means." He says his spiritual beliefs have evolved from inherited Roman Catholicism to juvenile atheism to youthful agnosticism back to something that resembles what the Gnostic Christians regarded as true. His studies of the works of unconventional but scientifically oriented explorers of consciousness have led him to conclude that ancient ideas about reincarnation best explain human experiences.
As a self-reformed ad man, Riley says he doesn't like to proselytize any more. But having co-authored a non-fiction book on romantic recovery, he has discovered that he likes to feel that his words can help his readers. So he now likes to share ideas that might inspire others.
As for his novel's theme, for most of his life Riley has felt unduly blessed with assets that he hasn't deserved. These "gifts" troubled him until he replaced the idea that simple coincidence had brought him those blessings, with notions of karma. But "karma" seemed to him a strangely alien word. He decided that a book about "Gifts" might offer readers a more accessible framework in which to consider some of the ideas that he has found more and more interesting as he's aged.
