It means that a young black man left his home country in the mid 1700s to follow his dream of adventure. He traveled by ship to the New World, an America that was struggling to exist, as he was struggling to exist. Through set backs, challenges, successes and wide experiences, he established his trading post on the gateway connecting the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes. Within that time, he survived a ship wreck coming to the New World, was nearly sold as a slave in New Orleans, prospered in St. Louis, found love with the Indians in Michigan and was feared and captured by the British during the Revolutionary War. When the war ended, he returned to his trading post where it thrived and he grew in prominence. His contribution was the roots he established for a major city of the world - CHICAGO.

When Lois Carroll Beh's planned year in Chicago stretched to nearly a decade, she became an ardent Chicagoan, exploring the city and its history with passion and intensity. As a former teacher, she was drawn to sharing her newfound knowledge with children. Her first project was a Chicago coloring book. While tutoring at an inner city elementary school, Beh was encouraged by the principal to share the then little-known story of Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable, who could serve as a role model to Chicago's youth. Years of research, writing, and rewriting created Du Sable The Father of Chicago.
