Gives Hoffmann's colored illustrations of 1861 and his German verses, side by side with new, closer, translations into English verse. These new translations try to follow the originals, word by word and line by line, as closely as possible; they concentrate on translating Hoffmann's use of natural straightforward language, and the easy 2/4 rhythm of his lines, that flow and scan and rhyme so effortlessly. Cheerful sequels are added to some of the stories: Conrad's thumbs are reattached by surgeons. Robert is found next morning clinging to the steeple, and is rescued by the fire department. An added page describes the making of suncatchers - stained glass window hangings - in the shapes of Struwwelpeter figures. A companion book Max and Moritz 2000 gives the original German and a new English translation for Wilhelm Busch's great children's classic (The Katzenjammer Kids, in America).
