"Eitel Time" is a summary of my personal philosophy that has guided me through 25 years of business as the president of five different companies. In "Eitel Time," I tried to explore the question of why we do what we do with our lives. It was sort of an attempt to get people to look in the mirror and ask themselves if they are living a life of true happiness.
Charlie Eitel owns his own consulting business, focused on turnaround management, business simplification and leadership development. Until August 1999, he served as president and chief operating officer of Interface Inc., where he was responsible for the corporation's worldwide operations, which include the manufacture and sale of floorcoverings, interior fabrics and architectural raised floors. During his six year tenure, Interface's sales grew from $635 million to $1.3 billion. In 1997, the company was named by Fortune magazine as one of the "Top 100 Companies To Work For in America" and in 1998, was selected by Fortune as one of "America's Most Admired Companies." Prior to joining Interfaced, Charlie was president and chief executive officer of Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings, a position he assumed in 1987 when the company was in serious financial trouble as the result of management irregularities. By 1989, Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings resumed profitability and prior to Charlie's departure in 1993, became the top-performing business unit within the C&A corporation. Charlie began his career in 1971 as a sales trainee for Coronet Carpets (a division of RCA). He held several sales and management positions before being appointed president in 1980. In 1981, he resigned that position to become president and chief operating officer of Carriage Industries. Under his leadership from 1981 - 1986, Carriage's sales grew from $6 million to $75 million. INC. magazine named the company one of "America's Fastest Growing Businesses."
