Synopsis
One man’s chronic gambling disorder became the inspiration for the modern-day Las Vegas Strip, and by 2009 responsible for the city’s fortunes of over $200 billion in revenue. His name was Billy Wilkerson, charismatic Hollywood publisher and successful owner of Parisian-styled nightclubs situated along Hollywood’s posh Sunset Strip. Despite all his business success, in 1944 his addiction to gambling led him to the inhospitable Nevada desert in search of a fix to his horrible addiction. At year’s end he had gambled away $750,000 and almost went broke. Nevertheless, his businesses continued to flourish. In 1945 the troubled gambler bought a tract of land along the old State Highway 91, four miles south of downtown Las Vegas. There he began building the largest palatial air-conditioned casino complex the world had ever known. But six weeks into construction, due to huge cost overruns and his addiction to gambling, Wilkerson ran out of money. Meanwhile, Bugsy Siegel and the boys back east learned of Wilkerson’s misfortune, and in time, would make him an offer he couldn’t refuse. When Wilkerson’s Flamingo Hotel & Casino was finally complete it would inspire the building of many other luxurious casino resorts, and change casino gaming and the Las Vegas landscape forever.
