No autopsy was performed (though it's obvious his surgeon did not realize a bullet had punctured his liver, which caused his death as it continued to bleed for days.) The author's aunt -- Jessica Lauren Fields -- heard people talking about the $600,000 contract to assassinate Long -- who threatened a 1936 populist challenge to dilettante Franklin Roosevelt -- and reported it to authorities. She was hauled into a kangaroo court, deemed "mentally incompetent," and locked up in a D.C. "mental institution" for the rest of her life. To keep her from talking about the oil companies, the railroad companies, and the opposing politicians who funded that hit, she was allowed no visitors for her remaining 53 years. True stories are generally told in "fictional novels' to avoid lawsuits, though not this one. In fact, anyone who was an adult when The Kingfish was shot in 1935 had to be in their 80s -- most of them long dead -- by the time this book was published in 1997. Totals 290 pp. including Appendix.
