Three little coupes, their Perspex windows flashing in the sunlight of a bright Autumn afternoon, flashed past the stands of the pit straight at Monza as they battled out the lead of a race for GT cars called the Coppa InterEuropa one Sunday in October 1949. So fast were they, in comparison to the rest of the field, that after four laps the had the long pit straight between them and the pursuing Maserati A6GCS coupe in fourth place. These three 2-liter Tipo 166 Berlinettas, each bodied by a different body-maker or, in Italian, Carrozzeria, were the products of a phenomenon Ferrari. His company had burst upon the scene as recently as 1947 with the 166 Spyder Corsa competition car. Now he was extending his range to closed cars which he could sell to his wealthy customers who wanted to take part in a little racing. Over the next twenty years, Ferrari would go on to build some of the most exciting and successful GT (enclosed) cars the world has ever seen. The first car was really very easy to drive but you had to watch the revs orZing! They would shoot up too quickly and the engine would break. At the time the car (125S) came out, it was revolutionary. No-one else in the world was making such an engine. I am convinced that Ferrari would never have been such a success if he had been producing a four, six or eight cylinder car. From an interview with Franco Cortese, the first driver to race the Ferrari 125S at Piacenza on May 11, 1947.
