For thousands of years, social and religious conditioning has encouraged us to always put others first. This has clouded the issue of self-care. After all, there are billions of people, so if you put others first, who will take care of you? Since age-old conditioning has emphasized caring for others, even at the expense of your own well-being, this book seeks to rebalance the "self versus other" dilemma by championing equal rights for self-care. Taking care of yourself doesn't mean you must handle everything yourself without help. Taking care of yourself simply means that you are responsible for yourself, including asking for help when you need it. The human heart will never be satisfied with caring only for the self. You can trust that if you take good care of yourself, you will naturally want to care for others. "Dr. Cat's Helping Handbook" is a beautifully designed, warmly personal, and easy-to-read guide with 55 in-depth chapters and 500-plus margin quotations by people from all over the world. The book's message is simple: Be compassionate with yourself and take good care of yourself. If you do, it will be the best gift you can give yourself, humanity, and the planet. Praise for "Dr. Cat's Helping Handbook": "Dr. Cat's Helping Handbook is a treasure. Its carefully gathered quotes alone make the book worth having. Cat has created a work of truth, power, and beauty." —Christiane Northrup, M.D., author of "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" "Dr. Cat's Helping Handbook is a valuable resource for those who seek to build stronger and more respectful relationships with themselves, others, and the world. I heartily recommend Cat's warm and openhearted style and the way she treats readers as partners on the path of personal growth." —Laura Davis, author of "The Courage to Heal"
Cat Saunders, Ph.D., is a longtime counselor, death doula, and nonsectarian minister. She is the author of "Dr. Cat's Helping Handbook: A Compassionate Guide for Being Human" and more than 200 articles and interviews, which have been reprinted around the world. Since the early 1970s, Cat has studied a wide array of therapeutic methods, body work and breathing techniques, cross-cultural spiritual disciplines, and creative healing modalities, including art therapy and ecstatic dance. Her doctoral research focused on the "missing link" related to eating disorders and functional neurology. Since 1985, Cat has maintained a private practice in Seattle, Washington, where she works with individuals, couples, families, groups, and small businesses. She also does personal and professional consultation via email and telephone for clients worldwide. Cat has been interviewed on radio and television regarding her anger-work techniques, her series of articles on death, and her role as a death doula and coma worker. In addition, Cat's lifelong devotion to interdisciplinary forms of prayer led her to found Rent-A-Monk, which makes certain aspects of her spiritual work available to others.
