Randolph G. Russell began writing the first and unpublished version of this book for his children, after realizing they did not know many things he assumed they were learning in school. In the course of doing research, he came across survey after survey showing that the lack of knowledge of basic American history and civics was profound and widespread across all age groups and all academic levels. The book became more sophisticated as a result and would eventually be used at a number of colleges, while remaining easily understood by younger readers. In addition to his expertise in American history, the author is an accomplished musician who has performed in many European countries and throughout the United States. In business, he held a number of upper-level financial manage-ment positions with companies in Florida and Georgia. Russell holds degrees from the University of Miami and the University of Florida.
