Randolph G. Russell began writing the first and unpublished version of this book for his children, after realizing they did not know many things he assumed they were learning in school. In the course of doing research for that family project, he came across survey after survey showing that the lack of basic knowledge was profound and widespread across all age groups and all academic levels. The book became more sophisticated as a result and, since publication, has been used at a number of colleges while remaining easily understood by younger readers. Russell's presentations on American history and civics literacy have been enthusiastically received by numerous audiences. In addition to his expertise in history, the author is an accomplished musician who has performed in many European countries and throughout the United States. He holds degrees from the University of Miami and the University of Florida.
