During his long and eventful career, Hal Conroy has been a mate in the British Merchant navy, and also served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. He has been editior of several weekly newspapers, publisher of a boating magazine, and a columnist for the Kingston Whig-Standard in Kingston, Ontario.
