From the back The dramatic changes which swept through the western plains were reflected in microcosm in the Pigeon Lake Mission.When the mission was first established, the native people enjoyed unquestioned occupancy of the entire region. Their lives had been affected by the fur trade. For centuries they had killed animals for self-subsistence, using hide, meat, bone, and fibre. Now they had become hunters for fur to be used in trade and barter. They had new tools and weapons. They met English- and French-speaking people and were influenced by them. But they lived where they wished, travelled as they wished, and maintained their own cultural communities and traditions.The character of the region changed rapidly after 1865.The future of Rundle’s Mission will be determined and shaped by the people who respond to its historical importance, and the people who find it a useful place for their purposes.
