Global warming has caused the catastrophic collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, with a resultant rapid rise in sea level that is flooding the Florida Keys and much of the southern and coastal areas of the state. The Dennison family, residents of Key West, have ignored the evacuation order too long: now they have no gas for their car and no way to escape but to walk the hundred miles along the only road to the mainland. And when they get there, they’re in and out of a herd of refugees who are all heading north to find dry ground. The government has its hands full rescuing the sick and the elderly whose homes are being swallowed by the sea; the hale and hearty must make it on their own past hurricanes, alligators, and snake-infested swamps, eating what they find and sleeping where they must. Full of adventure as well as heartwarming friendships, this is a cautionary tale with true relevance for our uncertain times.
