Synopsis

This is second in a series of four books. Each book represents the days of a different season in the year 2020. I started writing it in August, the 5th month the global Corona 19 viral pandemic was felt in Minnesota, USA. Isolated from friends and family, we sought safety and protection from a threat we couldn’t see, a virus we knew so little about, and an illness that many of us would not survive. It was also a time of political and social unease in so many places around the globe. It was a time of change—in how we lived, how we connected with others, and how we came to perceive the very real presence of death in our lives.

I have written haiku for a long time. The brief, strong images in the haiku generate for me questions of reflection and self-exploration. Each question emerges as a natural extension of what I write in the poem.

For some reason, in that late summer of 2020, I thought it would be an adventure to go 100 days, writing a new haiku each day. The writing started easily. And then, I got to day 100, and realized I wasn’t done. So, I picked up my pen and wrote #101. That’s when I realized I wanted to document the seasons of a full year. Using haiku, I tried to capture the flow of seasons across that 365-day cycle of observations from my window, living on the shore of a tiny lake in Circle Pines, Minnesota, in the United States of America.
