Using an up close and personal visual diary format, this book explores the homeless issue in one of the nation's most prosperous metropolitan areas. In Los Angeles, many thousands of people are homeless every night. They sleep on the streets of Skid Row. They sleep in the parks in affluent neighborhoods. They build encampments under bridges and overpasses. Photographer Larry Brownstein went in search of what many people try hard not to see – the faces and stories of the homeless. These photographs depict people struggling with homelessness as well as those who have recovered to lead productive and happy lives. The book also shows one agency's, The Midnight Mission, response to the homeless problem.
