Synopsis

The Muse Turns Her Back is an astoundingly lyrical book of poems. Hannon's profound sensitivity to barrenness, futility and tragedy never leads to cynicism, his intimate sense of beauty never leads to obliging optimism. He takes the world exactly as it is, without the surplus of deflecting nuances. Poetry is not just his calling, it's his fate, and one of his primal drives is to trim and pare the poetic line–and indeed language itself–back to bare stalk, to the essential song, the song of experience in its unadorned rawness. This book is vital music.
