A Birds' Guide to The Battery and New York Harbor presents an enchanting photographic view of the birds that congregate around the tip of Manhattan. This extremely urban environment seems an unlikely spot for birdwatching, but it lies directly along the ‘Atlantic Flyway’ migration route, and for thousands of years, since the end of the last ice age, birds have migrated to and through this area. Many water birds also enjoy the protected location of New York City's harbor.
Gail Karlsson provides humorous and sensitive profiles of the different types of birds she got to know downtown, observing how they relate to each other and to the space, as well as the people they encounter. She grew up in New York and lives in lower Manhattan but only recently began looking at birds in the city - encouraged by NYC Audubon programs, including bird walks in The Battery led by Gabriel Willow. The Battery Conservancy has upgraded the previously fairly barren space to support birds and wildlife by planting a variety of native trees and bushes, as well as an urban farm.
