In parts of The South, family funerals are always high drama, a ritualistic script to freeze memory and neatly bury the secrets. Southern Low Protestant Departure: A Funeral Poem, is a long narrative poem that takes place in the Deep South the day before a loved one's funeral and how the family prepares for the ritualistic send-off. The poem continues the next day with a Christian funeral in the chapel of a funeral parlor. The poem ends with the burial in a cemetery with all the tears and histrionics of grieving kinfolk.
