Betsy L. Howell is a writer and wildlife biologist living on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula. In 1999, she began transcribing the journals of her great-great-grandfather, James Darsie Heath, who served with the 72nd Illinois Infantry from 1862-1865. After taking two trips to retrace this man's travels, she wrote Acoustic Shadows, a memoir about the generational effects of war, and also became interested in the women who disguised themselves as men in order to serve their country. Howell has also published articles on natural history and travel in American Forests, Earth Island Journal, South Loop Review, Clackamas Literary Review, Apple Valley Review, and Women in Natural Resources. She lives in Port Townsend, Washington.
