Synopsis

Born at the end of the nineteenth century, Robert E. Locher (1888 1956) developed an eye for the modernization of America while incorporating the classical elements of previous generations. This ability to combine the classic and the modern catapulted him to the forefront of American design in the late twenties and early thirties, a ground-breaking time in American culture and aesthetics. A Modern Classic: Robert E. Locher is the first monograph on this now lesser-known but very influential Renaissance man of the applied arts. Locher, who began his training as an apprentice to an architect in Lancaster and then in Philadelphia, made the leap in 1914 to move to New York City. He moved to 45 Washington Square South, the heart of Greenwich Village, where he freelanced as a fashion illustrator for Bonwit Teller and New York Press. Quickly, Locher began to design sets and costumes for the theater, which propelled him forward to illustrating for Vogue and Vanity Fair. These illustrations caught the eye of the Baron Adolph de Meyer, who hired Locher to work for his interior design firm. This exposure completed Locher s training and soon he received his own commissions. Mrs. Benjamin Rogers employed Locher to oversee every aspect of her new Sutton Place townhouse, which launched his career. The years 1928 through 1931 were incredibly productive for Locher. He designed major rooms in the new National Hotel in Havana Cuba, private for Mrs. Whitney at The Whitney Studio Club and was a founder of the American Designers Gallery. All of which left an indelible mark on the future of modern design in American. In all his work, Locher remained steadfast to his ability to bridge between the timelessness of classic design and the contemporary modes of the modern world.
