"On the north coast of Peru, following a dramatic 1987 skirmish between archaeologists, grave robbers, and the local police, the long-buried iconography of this remote area erupted into the public consciousness. In this book, photographer Mario Silva illustrates the ways in which the artwork and symbolism of Peru s ancient Moche culture have infiltrated every aspect of the area s quotidian life. From bus stations, roadside shrines, and souvenir shops, Silva vividly documents the vast influence of Moche iconography, showing unexpected parallels between architecture and advertising, valuable antiquities and cheap knick-knacks. Soft cover. Etat : Near Fine. Colour Photographs (illustrateur). First Edition. SUBTITLED : `Images from the North Coast of Peru' . From the introductory remarks two thoughts stuck with me. The similar feel of Silva's work and that of Edward Burtynsky. (Perhaps Silva zooms in closer.) The second, how Silva mixes archaeology, culture, and economic realities in his photographic thinking. These two thoughts will serve as handrails as you investigate these approx 70 pages (UNpaginated) of brilliant photographs. There is a sculptural element but also a very textured sense. Certainly there is humour. Plenty of architecture too. Cond : Cover features a photo (back as well) of Naylamp at Lambayeque. There are French flaps, and red end-papers. No names nor marks. Collectible ! ! Quote (p. 05) : " ._._. aesthetic standards and values. Born in Chicago in 1970 of Peruvian parents, he moved to Peru with his mother at the age of four and was raised in Lima before returning to the United States to study art ayt the University of Colorado where he graduated in 1994.
