Synopsis

This memoir follows the thread of Paula Morrow’s life that led to her becoming an Environmental Activist.

It’s not until she finished writing this, or putting it together really, because it partly consists of pieces she has written about her adventures over the years, that she realised that it could also be seen as a Journey Towards Wholeness.

She goes from nearly delinquent, certainly an alienated teenager, racing her car around city streets late at night and experimenting with drugs and too much alcohol, to being extremely responsible. She learns through the huge experiences she has, and through having children, to take responsibility for the planet!

Paula has six university and private college degrees and post-graduate qualifications, and has also been arrested six times: against coal mining, and while trying to protect trees and the environment.

She and her first young husband leave Australia at age 19 and backpack across 24 countries, putting their lives at risk particularly in India, Iraq and Kuwait.

She works for the BBC in London in the very lively years of 1967/68 where, in Europe it seemed to her, modern protest was born, as well as her first baby.

She starts an Encounter Group as well as selling books and posters about change in an anti-Vietnam War shop called 'Stuff' which she runs in North Sydney.

She and her two-year-old son are there at the start of what was probably the first commune of the modern era in Yandina, Queensland after her husband leaves them.

Two years later they are part of the well-intentioned wild fun that was the Nimbin Aquarius Festival in 1973. Its theme was Survival.

She and her second husband try to be self-sufficient on a couple of acres in Northern NSW. They had started studying, between them: Psychiatric Nursing (her), Medicine (Bevan), Acupuncture (both of them), Bio-Dynamic Agriculture (him), Osteopathy and Chiropractic (him), Herbalism and Nutrition (her).

It becomes obvious that you need clean soil, air and water to grow healthy food and herbs to make healthy human beings.

Bevan dies at age 35.

Paula helps to start environmental groups and has run for parliament for The Greens.

She runs workshops in Alternative Medicine (very much at the scientific end, complementary to orthodox medicine), and in Creative Writing. She is involved with progressive groups and continues to write. She has started a comedy group during the Pandemic.
