Synopsis

Inspired by real events in business, Ms. Keane tells this fictionalized story of Irena Nowak, a single mother in her dream job turned nightmare, where managers mistreat employees and co-workers abuse each other. This character-rich story reveals among others: • The company owner who tells Irena, the marketing manager, concerned for long-term success, not to worry because “there are plenty of hungry women out there.” • Even after she reports being physically assaulted by a co-worker for rejecting his sexual advances, Irena’s supervisor tells her to “stop complaining and get a thicker skin.” For love of her work and the salary to support her children, Irena endures until she consults the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and her local Fair Employment Practices agency. This story takes the reader step by step from filing a grievance to resolution.
