Synopsis
In 2005, Washington supported the decision to hold Palestinian legislative elections in January 2006. Decision-makers trusted polling data that all but guaranteed a victory for the secular Fatah faction over Hamas, a designated terrorist organization. In retrospect, this was a grave error; Hamas won the election by a wide margin. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice later admitted, "It does say something about us not having a good enough pulse." Four years later, amidst a new U.S. drive for Middle East peace, has our ability to gauge Palestinian political sentiment improved? The Foundation for Defense of Democracies commissioned a study, using proprietary software usually deployed on behalf of the U.S. military, to explore the Arabic-language social media websites that are popular among Palestinians. This study reveals the trends, thoughts, and perceptions of Palestinians on a range of issues, with a focus on those that could impact current U.S. policies.

À propos de l'auteur
Jonathan Schanzer is Vice President of Research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and the author of Hamas vs. Fatah: The Struggle for Palestine (Palgrave Macmillan) and Al Qaeda's Armies: Middle East Affiliate Groups & the Next Generation of Terror (WINEP). He was an intelligence analyst at the U.S. State Department of the Treasury, and has traveled widely throughout the Middle East. He is completing his Ph.D. at King's College London, documenting the United States Congress' efforts to combat terrorism. Mark Dubowitz is Executive Director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and leads FDD's projects on terrorist media and Iran. Dubowitz has published widely, testified before Congress, provided evidence in a prosecution against U.S. supporters of Hezbollah, and is co-author of Iran's Energy Partners; and Iran's Chinese Energy Partners (both FDD Press). He worked previously in venture capital and technology. He has a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University (SAIS), and a J.D. and M.B.A from University of Toronto.
