Robert Campbell (1951–2004) was born in Marshall, Texas, and came to Los Angeles in 1975. A painter, writer, and musician, he employed the arts as interchangeable mediums to express his magical, humorous vision of the world. He called his style “Real Fantasy” to emphasize the fantastic in his take on Fantastic Realism.
While showing in art galleries, he began working as a scenic painter in the theater and movie business. His film credits include Echo Park (1985) and Bagdad Cafe (1987). He also worked on music videos for Tom Petty, Cyndi Lauper, Tori Amos, Nirvana, and Kenny Loggins (he can be seen playing the painter in “Vox Humana”).
His comics were left unfinished after diabetes robbed him of his eyesight, and ultimately his life. This book contains his two graphic novels: On a Purple Spiral and Floating. He intended these works to be a single graphic novel, but despite the 272 pages in this book, there remain some unfinished parts. His wonderful storytelling and drawings sustain this autobiographical fantasy.
