Clara Endicott Sears was born to a wealthy New England family and started Fruitlands, Museum in Harvard, Massachusetts. In the mid-1970's I lived up the road from Fruitlands which houses both an old Shaker House and the Fruitlands Farm House of Bronson Alcott (Lousia May Alcott's father). Ms. Sears wrote many books and in 1911 she decided to compile her favourite quotes from the New Thought and Transcendental authors. She published only enough books for her and her friends and years later published it for others. Ms Sears wrote in her forward:" The thoughts this little book contains cannot fail to give poise to those who have lost their bearings;-- a reasonable and well-founded joy to those who have become disheartened, and a law of living which makes event the rough places along the path seem worthwhile. They have done this for me, they will do it for you. I have never known them to fail. We debated changing the pronouns from "him" to "her" and "one" but decided to leave it in its original form.
