Synopsis

Tycoon Maximilian von der Dusenberger has lived a life out of a Dickens story. His father disappeared at the end of World War II, and his mother died a few months later giving birth, at which time the young Max panicked and fled to a new life, as an orphan struggling in the streets of a battered Berlin. A stranger arranges for Max to go to school and to come to America, and later, presents money that aids Max to develop a thriving business and become a wealthy realtor. But he still wonders: what happened to his father? What happened to the boy born as his mother died? Max begins a quiet search which takes years and leads him to, among others, a young woman who will become his wife, a man who may be his long lost stepbrother, and a man named Charles Hardin, also an orphan, a cynical man who cannot commit to any relationship once it becomes serious. Max hires Charles, they become friends, and more, they discover that their relationship, and Charles’ relationship to Max’s sister-in-law—with whom Charles has become involved—may be too close for comfort. Soon Charles becomes involved in a search for his own father, a quest that takes him to France, where he is shot at and beaten, and meets a mysterious, beautiful blond who may be the assassin hired by Maximilian, and who may be out to kill Charles before he can learn the truth about his father.
