Synopsis

Dancing Shadows, Mustangs & Dreams is a book of Sam Mattise's poems about his experiences as a working cowboy in the West. Each of the 17 poems is paired with a photographic image by Michael Luque, captured in the Northwest and illustrates the message in the poem. Mattise grew up in Pennsylvania, but had a dream of being a working cowboy in the West. He fulfilled that dream by working on ranches, doing some rodeoing, and finally ended up managing the BLM's Wild Horse Program for the State of Idaho. It's these experiences that he writes about. From "Idaho Mustangs", which tells the story of mustang herds in Idaho to "Heaven", which sings the praises of beautiful and diverse Idaho, Mattise tells these tales in thoughtful and interesting poetry. Some poems will make you laugh, "Ridin' a Red Horse", and some will make you cry, "Friends", but all will be a good read. Luque grew up in Idaho and began taking wildlife photos 40 some years ago in Alaska. Today he still shoots wildlife, but also western themes such as rodeos, mustangs, and western life in general. Each photo paired with a poem was chosen specifically to help tell the story. Cowboys, Mustangs & Dreams is a cowboy poetry book that's a little different than most, in that photos help tell the story. Cowboys of long ago didn't have this luxury. We hope folks reading the poems will get the same flavor of folks listening to those cowboys of the past, but with a little spice added.
