Melanie Johnson wrote her first children’s book in elementary school. The story was about a fish rejected by the school to which she was born. Hurt at first, of course, the fish learned that there were other schools that would welcome her. You can probably guess the moral of that story. Since earning a Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Johnson has studied Community Planning, and is currently attending seminary. “I’ve had many jobs in many fields, but writing has been my constant work.” Johnson, who has kept journals since she was fifteen, has been a freelance writer for two decades. This is her first children’s book written as an adult, but she expects that there will be more. “Children’s books can stay with the reader for years and years. I still recall the first lines of my very favorite book as a child. If those memorable books also have positive messages, then a child’s character can be influenced for the good, well into adulthood.” Johnson, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, resides in Atlanta, Georgia. About the Illustrator: Donald C. Leonard Mr. Leonard currently resides in Kent, Washington, but is originally from Alabama. During the course of his early schooling he discovered his gift and love for drawing. He received a great deal of encouragement from his teachers at his elementary and junior high schools. The more he created, the more he realized that he was building a reputation as a young artist. His talent was evident, but unfortunately, the schools in his hometown did not offer art classes. Mr. Leonard’s family moved to Seattle in pursuit of better educational pportunities for their children. At the age of 15, Donald was able to take several art classes and quickly found that his passion was art. Mr. Leonard focuses on painting subject matter that is important to him, such as experiences from his childhood, African culture, the Civil Rights Movement and the struggle of the less fortunate. His goal is to use his talent to bring hope, joy, inspiration and awareness to everyone who views his artwork. Mr. Leonard understands his talent is a gift from God and feels privileged to share it with others.
