Monarch butterflies are the champion marathon flyers of the world.
A monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) on average weighs .5 grams. A monarch from Canada migrating to Mexico and then back to Texas in the spring, will have traveled 4,000 miles. Weight for weight, this amazing feat is equal to 265,842 complete through-hikes from Georgia to Maine on the Appalachian Trail by a 160 pound person. And the monarch doesn’t even need a backpack, rather it collects its food on the way.

The Balsam Mountains of the Blue Ridge Range south of Asheville, North Carolina are a part of the Appalachian Mountains. The Balsams contain major flyways of the monarch, in part because the butterflies are funneled by the topography to cross these mountains in the gaps. Monarchs are efficient flyers, and the gaps allow the butterflies to cross the mountains at lower elevations, thus saving them time and energy. Since the Blue Ridge Parkway follows the ridgeline of the Balsams, and since plenty of nectar sources bloom along the Parkway during the migration season, it’s a perfect combination to view the butterflies close up on their southward journeys.
