“What is wrong with our youth today?” If you have ever asked this question, then this book is for you! Studies indicate that there are critical areas of youth development that must be addressed in order for youth to grow into productive adults. In addition, youth need to be surrounded by caring adults in places that support their development. Indigenous rites of passage experiences have supported adolescents in the transition to adulthood throughout history. Unfortunately, for a great number of contemporary youth these nurturing environments are not readily available leaving youth to create faltering and sometimes even dangerous rites of passage experiences for themselves. This vicious cycle is what opens the line of questioning: “What’s wrong with these kids?”
After extensive research of various contemporary rites of passage models that holistically address the needs of children, Dr. Adams presents the "Right of Passage" as a play on words that signifies how vital a rite of passage is for young people and should be a right and not an option. Using the Cathedral CrossRoads Rites of Passage Experience as a model, this 8-week pilot model is distinctive from the traditional youth Sunday School program in that it also intentionally addresses the emotional, physical, social as well as the spiritual needs of youth. It is clear from evaluation results that youth benefited from the time spent with caring adults. Youth were able to move positively toward adulthood with the ability to apply critical thinking skills to their chaotic environments, which are often difficult to maneuver. This program model helps youth to bridge the gap between childhood and make adulthood a smoother transition. This work was the documentation of the evolving work as it relates to youth and emphasizes their right to pass from one stage of their lives to another but also the critical responsibility of adults that is necessary to create the opportunity for the rite of passage process.
