Synopsis

This is the third volume in a series of greatest hits from my Psychology Today blog The Human Beast. The other subtitles are Through the Lens of Evolution and Evolution in the Modern World. My primary motivation in writing these pieces was to tackle some issue that excited my curiosity, had no clear or obvious answer, and could be addressed using an evolutionary mindset.
That we live in an apocalyptic age should be clear to anyone who pays attention to problems like worldwide pandemics, internet conspiracies, climate change, or the decline of objective journalism, as hermetically sealed “truth” communities, or rabbit holes, proliferate with the help of social media. There is often little overlap in these groups’ perception of reality. Scientific evidence is discounted or ignored in favor of what is preciously called “doing my own research.”
Science is the ultimate truth teller. In The Human Beast series, I do not avoid controversy, but endeavor to be as close to the relevant scientific evidence as possible and cite key sources. I want to convey a greater appreciation of how an evolutionary perspective helps us to understand ourselves and the fragile world we inhabit. As Darwin noted, “There is grandeur in this view of life...”
