James W. Van Manen was born in Sonoma CA, the second son to Deaf parents. He is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). Dr. Van Manen earned a BA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the University of Northern Iowa. He earned his MA in Linguistics of Signed Languages from Gallaudet University in 1997 and completed his Ph.D. in Administration, also from Gallaudet University. He has worked as a college professor in Chicago IL, Indianapolis IN, and Fremont, OH, He was the director of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services in Indiana for eight years and has worked as an an ASL-English Interpreter in Iowa, Ohio, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, Indiana, and Illinois. He has loved Pop Art since he first saw it in the 1970s. While he has never been a full-time artist, he has been a strong supporter of Deaf Art and Deaf artists. Van Manen proudly lives in downtown Chicago. He is Associate Professor in the ASL-English Interpretation Department at Columbia College Chicago.
