James W. Van Manen studies how native users of American Sign Language use their alphabet and how this relates to the rest of the language. In addition he writes about Deaf Artists and Deaf Art and its movements. He is also a hard of hearing college professor at Columbia College Chicago in the ASL department. He holds a PhD. and MA from Gallaudet University and a BA in Teaching from the University of Northern Iowa.
