Synopsis

A note to parents and perceptive children:I was not a big fan of coloring books as a child. I found the pictures clunky and simple. As a budding artist, ‘coloring within the lines” seemed restrictive. As an adult, I wanted to share my love of Appalachian history- the sweep and complexity of it- with young people. So I made a coloring book that both sweeps through history and is complex in its details.A wise person said, “children will perform up to or down to whatever standard you set them... it rather depends on whether you want them to be challenged or patronized.”With “An Early Appalachian Coloring Book,” I have tried to catch a true picture of the struggle that came with the “civilizing” of these mountains. This includes touching on the stories of African-Americans and Indians in a way that is not just sentimental. I believe your children- and you, children- have heart enough to see the truth about our country’s history. As a professional artist I have learned that sometimes, you DO want to color within the lines. The secret is in knowing which lines to follow and which to ignore.Have fun!
