Synopsis

At 17, Samuel has known only abuse at home and a lack of purpose in the world. When a pretty classmate asks him to kill her groping uncle in exchange for an hour of her affection, he accepts. Clumsy but successful, Samuel emerges feeling empowered. Leaving Tucson for south Phoenix, he develops himself into muscle for hire, dealing out beatings with regularity. He is introduced to Nate, an older businessman who develops and employs professional hitmen. During his training, Samuel meets the beautiful Rica and a brash former SAS commando known as Scrote. Rica is impeccably efficient. Scrote is excessively brutal. Over time, Samuel becomes a blend of the two. Hounded by run-ins with rival hitters, confusion over his growing feelings for Rica, and wondering where he belongs in life, Samuel’s struggles are constant. Through violent events that test his very sanity, Samuel is eventually granted that most elusive of gifts: he comes to understand the value of life, and what it means to find closure.

Kyle Russell is a native of Phoenix, Arizona. He has an undergraduate degree in Administration of Justice as well as a graduate degree in Secondary Education (English) from Arizona State University. If he isn’t sleeping or working as a middle school writing teacher, he is in his home office working on novels and screenplays. Writing is compulsory for him. He feels unfulfilled if a day passes without new words being added to a manuscript. He loves the editing process and often edits the work of other authors. Mr. Russell is the father of twins who keep him on his toes, but reward him with limitless ideas. They bring him immense joy and an overwhelming feeling of pride. Many of the themes he writes about come from the excitement and fear involved in parenting in this aggressive and dangerous world. Several of his books-in-progress are built around this exact truth. His marriage of nearly 20 years fuels him, as he creates characters for whom such possibilities exist. As a school teacher, he sees and hears daily that commitments such as marriage are fast becoming extinct. His wife grants him the faith to press forward. Being worthy of the goals we set for ourselves in another o his recurring themes, as a result. Kyle is dedicated to writing novels everyone can read. Some of the material might leave a bitter aftertaste, but there is no profanity to be found. It is his firm belief that a story that can’t be told without swearing isn’t worth telling. He writes about struggles and fears and the kind of evil we all face in life, acknowledging that horrible individuals exist and act against us. He does so to exorcise the nightmares any father and husband dreads, allowed to sleep a little better at night because of the ends his villains come to in his stories.
