Synopsis

The book's suggestions are based on information from 20,000 managers and contributors, gathered during the author's five decades of researching, teaching and writing. The author offers two buckets of leadership tools designed to increase performance while reducing stress. The structural bucket explains tools formalized by the organization and include: the role of purpose, outcomes metrics, selection practices, decision making, performance appraisals and accountability. The second is a bucket of relationship tools that explain how high-performing leaders communicate, achieve engagement, motivate team members, influence others, increase teamwork, lead change and address conflict. Leaders rely heavily on structural tools because they are tangible and specific. However, even though relationship tools are squishy and less concrete, high-performing leaders depend more heavily on relationship than on structural tools. Additionally, the book addresses current issues such as managing remote workers, addressing generational differences, and solving the inclusivity challenge. For each chapter, the author asks readers to identify their beliefs prior to reading the material. After reading the text, readers list answers based on the book. The book confirms 65% to 75% of the readers' current beliefs, but will challenge 25% to 35% of conventional beliefs.
