Synopsis

What it is:
Sixty five questions/statements with basic discussion guidance for teaching critical thinking skills using various topics suitable for for all advanced learning environments.

How it works:

  1. The students are divided into groups to respond to the topic.
  2. One of the 65 topics are presented to the groups for discussion.
  3. Each group has to search out internet, library, journal sources to support their argument or point of view, all opinions must have backup, no gut feelings.
  4. Each group presents their work to the class and the teacher decides which group gave the best support for their position or have the class decide by vote.
Why you should use it:

1. It is easy to incorporate into a classroom situation and sixty five topics will last more than one class.
2. It will broaden the minds of the students.
3. It will change attitudes. Maybe even yours.

When to use it.
1. Once a week as this will be the fun part of a class because everyone has opinions but not everyone knows how to find out if they are correct.
2. When you just want an easy day.
3. When you see students succumb to societal group think.

Additionally:
This is also a good methodology to supplement teaching the logical fallacies and Socratic method of reasoning for the advanced group.
There is no limit on how these examples may be used to teach critical thinking.
