We’ve all had the occasion on knowing a person who seems to make us feel that it is our responsibility to take care of their concerns. They also seem to have a way of just getting under our skin and leaving us with the feeling that we’ve just been conned into doing what they should be taking care of themselves. If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone. Our reactions to these people let us know the level of our susceptibility to manipulators and con artists. Some of them are even members of our own family. However, we all have the ability to recognize their ploys and disarm their potential over us.
They play their game by playing the aggressor, acting helpless or asserting that they are our best friend and only want what is best for us while making us feel guilty for not doing things their way. The manipulee, that’s us, can only be played through what we want; what we want to be, want to be seen as, what we want to have, what we want to avoid, essentially, through what we feel that we lack. The manipulator knows this and has a sixth sense on knowing what ploy they can use to get us to align with what they want. What is not known is that the manipulator also feels the same sense of insecurity that we might feel but is better at hiding and working around it through using their craftiness and aggression.
Ploys for Dominance teaches us to recognize their ploys in the moment. This is our primary challenge before we can do anything else. Then, our secondary challenge is learning to trust ourselves and learn how to respond so we can prevent ourselves from being “suckered” in. We all have everything we need to be and do what we want. We do this by simply turning off our susceptibility to them and to re-empower our own self-worth and confidence.
