Synopsis

Only a couple of generations ago, in Western society the churches had virtually the sole franchise on spirituality but made scant use of it because of their focus on doctrines with little to say about the spiritual. Non-Christian and non-religious sources quickly filled the gap. It is now clear that the Spirit can be discerned without reference to belief systems. However there has always been a mystical tradition within Christianity as there has in all religions; and in them much human experience of the Divine has been recorded. One of the things this book tries to do is to look at these spiritual traditions from a single overall perspective and try to distill what is common in them. The author’s overall stance is to take the Spiritual seriously. A most accessible way is through contemplative meditation by which any mediator can perceive for themselves the reality of the still small voice within them and recognise it as One with the universal Spirit. This provides a means for the transformation of life. The format of the book is firstly a discussion of the way the spiritual has been perceived in all religions, and how interest in, and techniques for, exploring the mystical have been returned to the West through a range of routes. Many relevant sources are cited. Secondly the author takes his own life experiences as examples of how the workings of the Spirit can be discerned and its rules discovered through being attentive to life. Thirdly, it offers guidance to those wishing to establish a meditation group, or to set out alone, on practical ways to meditate; and gives 40 different sample introductions to individual meditation sessions. The book promotes completely open meditation groups where people of any or no religious faith can meet comfortably and where no-one will be offended by what is said. It results in quite novel approaches to, and conclusions about, many spiritual issues being spread throughout the book.
