Synopsis

In December, 2009, in Bodh Gaya, Shamar Rinpoche gave a teaching on the Noble King of Prayers of Excellent Conduct, also known as the Samantabhadra Wishing Prayer. Buddha Shakyamuni gave the teaching of the Samantabhadra Wishing Prayer to urge practitioners to treat the great Bodhisattva Samantabhadra as a role model to emulate so that all their wishes may be accomplished. The teaching by Shamar Rinpoche was transcribed into a book first released by Shanti Path Publications of Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2011. In this edition, the Tibetan text, as well as an English-language version of the prayer itself, translated by Pamela Gayle White under the guidance of Shamar Rinpoche, is included in the book.

Shamar Rinpoche (1952-2014), Mipham Chokyi Lodro, was the 14th Shamarpa. Born in 1952, in Derge, Tibet, Shamar Rinpoche was recognized by the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa in 1957, and by the 14th Dalai Lama. In 1996, he began organizing Bodhi Path Buddhist Centers, a network of centers covering many continents, in which a non-sectarian approach to meditation is practiced. In addition, over the years, Shamar Rinpoche founded several non-profit organizations worldwide engaged in charitable activities, including projects to provide schooling for children born into poverty and promoting animal rights. Shamar Rinpoche encouraged meditation and study among his students and authored several books during his lifetime, including a detailed biographical compilation on the 10th Karmapa, A Golden Swan in Turbulent Waters (2012), and a concise meditation guide, Boundless Awakening: The Heart of Buddhist Meditation (2013), both published by Bird of Paradise Press. He authored a key text for Buddhist students, The Path to Awakening (Delphinium Books, 2014), a presentation of Chekawa Yeshe Dorje’s Seven Points of Mind Training. This book serves as both a timely guide to living a fulfilling life as a Buddhist, and a practical manual of meditation techniques.
