Synopsis

This anthology is a living testament to the spirit of Flint, Michigan. The city has seen more than its share of tragedies. What was once a thriving automotive town is now faced with reimaging itself as a college town. Some neighborhoods have seen more than their share of gang violence. Driving through these streets, burned out, boarded up, and abandoned homes are all too common sights. Many of our young people have become desensitized to the violence that surrounds them. They have seen family members gunned down in the streets and friends die in their arms. They are blind to all of the culture Flint has to offer – museums, art schools, the symphony and two playhouses. In spite of all this, “Flintstones” refuse to give up. Many have an unshakable faith that this town will rise again. Children still go to school; parents go to work; and they all continue to dream of a better life. In the middle of all this turmoil and tragedy sits Mott Adult High School, a beacon of hope for many. Every student who walks through our doors has a story. They don’t live in a world of cotton candy and lollipops. Their world is violent and unstable. For many, school is their only safe haven. In spite of all they go through, our students have the courage, commitment and fortitude to keep striving to make their dreams come true. They dream of becoming nurses, entrepreneurs, professional athletes, architects and lawyers. They dream of moving to Atlanta, Houston, and the West Coast. Mostly, they dream of making it out alive. These are but a few of their stories. - L.M. Shedd - N. Burkhardt
