Synopsis

Amanda Woodbury is a young woman who is trying to deal with learning about herself and her own adictions while living with her alcoholic mother. There are many family secrets, particularly surrounding Amanda’s birth, that haunt her around the edges of her mind. She can’t seem to get to the secrets, mostly because she has spent most of her lifetime hiding behind a bottle. She started drinking at the age of twelve, and is only attempting to quit because she is now reaping the ill effects of her alcoholic actions. In other words, because she legally has no other choice. Amanda is placed in two different rehab settings over the course of the story. The first place doesn’t really help, primarily because she doesn’t believe she has a problem with alcohol. She thinks she has a problem with her life, and the fact that she cannot gain control over it. During her second rehab stint, she bonds somewhat with her therapist, and this connection helps her to look further insider herself to explore both her addiction and her own power to learn new and more functional coping skills. Amanda meets several people along the way who impact her. Some are good influences, some are not. But as she travels through her journey to sobriety, she learns how to separate the good from the bad, and more importantly, how to acknowledge her own part in taking ownership of her life. This is a story of empowerment and redemption. Amanda does not only work on her issue with alcohol, but she also works stringently to improve her overall quality of life. She receives a sizeable inheritance from the side of her family she has never known. She uses this to get on with her life and to work towards complete her education. She does not rest on the laurels of others. How she juggles her budding functionalism against her family’s dysfunctions forms the basis of the story, as she strives to forge a successful life on her own terms.
