When the Berlin-based cultural magazine LETTRE INTERNATIONAL organized its philosophical essay competition, it received 2,481 submissions in seven languages from 123 countries. Juries chose 33 authors as finalists: this essay is one of these short-listed papers. It sends a farewell to the twentieth and a welcome to the twenty-first century. The essay deals with physical travels from the voyages of dicovery to our more mental journeys through cyberspace. It looks at communications, world history, developments from Gutenberg's printing press to the Internet, and much more. In doing this, it finds ironies. One of these ironies is the re-creation of white spots on the map: we can now find the old terra incognita all over again. That's the unintended result of our advanced technological and widely (mis)informed age. We will have to roll up our sleeves and work to deal with the situation. Media coverage about the essay contest was widespread. Articles appeared in the New York Times, Neue Zuercher Zeitung, El Pais, Der Spiegel, Die Welt, Die Zeit, and elsewhere. The Munich paper Sueddeutsche Zeitung called the event the _Fest of the Unknown Thinkers_.

Biography Erika Schelby is an award-winning writer and researcher with much experience in business. She co-owned and team-built a small business company, has held management positions in Europe and the US, and has traveled widely. Already an adult with two children, Ms. Schelby graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, nd Phi Kappa Phi from Kansas State University and holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. Writing has been a delicious indulgence, but a lot of living, working, and caring came first. Only now is there more time and opportunity for doing it. Her slender book BESTIARY FOR BUSINESS hit the Kindle TOP FREE 100 best seller list in 3 categories on March 30th, 2013. It placed # 1 in SATIRE, # 1 in ECONOMIC CONDITIONS, and # 26 in BUSINESS and INVESTING. Erika Schelby was one of eight winners in the American Express Annual Review of Travel International Essay Competition. She also reached the Short List of 33 writers in another International Essay Contest. Nearly 2500 contributors from 123 countries submitted their work in seven languages. Her essay was published by Kindle on May 23, 2013 and will now also be available as a paperback.
