The history of Raleigh County, West Virginia began long before it achieved official status in 1850. The earliest settlers carved a harsh living from the wilderness, but their stories show them to be people just like us, with similar dreams and foibles. Written with the traditions of the late Rev. C. Shirley Donnelly and journalist Jim Wood as models, this collection of articles on Raleigh County is like a series of conversations, history stories told among friends and family to pass along to subsequent generations. Using nearly a hundred sources from genealogical studies to old newspaper articles, Fresh History Brewed Daily: Raleigh County (WV) People, Places, Happenings 1750 - Present covers over 250 years of local heritage, from the earliest frontier families and the still-present divisions caused by the Civil War to immigrant coal miners and airplane crashes. You will find coalfield baseball, talented singers and writers, unsolved murders, and hometown heroes like Basil Plumley and Bill Withers. There is a special salute to Raleigh County men and women who sacrificed for our country, from the Revolution to Vietnam. If you are from the area, you are sure to find something still recognizable today. These stories are told with enough documentation and analysis to satisfy history lovers, but also plenty of humor and connection to the present to keep everyone else interested as well. You may even learn something about your own family, because it is Fresh History, Brewed Daily!
