The dominant discourse of accountability has done serious damage to the idea, promise, and practice of progressive schooling. This book both explores and challenges an understanding of accountability that essentially operates as an increasingly refined, high-stakes regime of surveillance. The very notion of reform, anchored in a deep concern for equity and social justice, has been eclipsed by a crude, technicist reading of progress. Without lapsing into a prescriptive mode, the author pries open spaces both theoretically and practically where what he calls the practice of freedom can emerge. The thinking and what the author sees as the stance of the philosopher Michel Foucault has proven to be enormously helpful in this regard. The book is divided into 3 main sections: power/knowledge nexus, moral agency and progressive frameworks / progressive possibilities.
