Synopsis

Making of an Athlete is the story of a skinny 8th grader, considered a non-athlete at that time, who became a national class athlete. Introduced to the mile in high school by a friend by a process of elimination, Fred left high school with county and regional mile wins. At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Fred continued with school records in several distance events and a regional cross-country win. After serving his 2-year commitment to the Army, he began working as a chemical engineer and competing in local races. This resulted in two 3rd place finishes in the steeplechase at the National Championships and competing in the 1964 Olympic Trials. Leaving racing in track meets for competing in road races, Fred competed in 15 Boston Marathons, finishing as high as 15th out of 1,500 runners. At age 40, Fred set national age group records at 15 and 20 kilometers and was national over-40 champion at 20 kilometers. In his early 50’s, Fred took up the triathlon and had much success.
