Synopsis

If you love the man, do you have to support his war? Rebecca Benson can’t forgive her husband Adam for dying in Vietnam, a war he volunteered to join. Rebecca struggles to honor her husband's service, but she can't ignore her increasingly anti-war sentiments. Was he selfish or patriotic? Adam’s death leaves her with a footlocker she avoids opening. When she does, she discovers a photo of a pretty Vietnamese woman smiling adoringly at him. As her questions grow about the war and about Adam, her mother and neighbors say she is a traitor, and she is called a Commie by strangers. Her friends in the Daughters of the American Revolution encourage her to be more patriotic. Rebecca's relationships with a paraplegic veteran, a madras-wearing pot-smoking girlfriend, and the Marine who watched her husband die lead to painful internal conflict. Her pursuit of the truth about America's role in Southeast Asia reveals her naiveté about courage, patriotism, and the purpose of love.
